Pharmacy - Program Overview

Sibley Memorial Hospital is a 318 bed community hospital located in northwest Washington, D.C.  Sibley’s campus is home to Grand Oaks, an assisted living residence; the Sibley Cancer Center; and The Sibley Renaissance, which houses the Center for Rehabilitative Medicine, Sibley Senior Services, The Sibley Center for Breast Health, Sibley Center for Advanced Gynecologic surgery, The Sibley Center for Weight Loss Surgery, a skilled nursing care unit, and a residential Alzheimer’s unit.

As a private, not-for-profit, full-service community hospital, Sibley offers medical, surgical, intensive care, obstetrics, psychiatric and skilled nursing inpatient services. The hospital operates a 24-hour Emergency Department with a full range of outpatient services. Sibley is recognized in the community as a major provider of surgical, oncology, orthopedic, and obstetrics services.

The purpose of the ASHP-Accredited Sibley Pharmacy Practice Residency Program is to develop pharmacists who are valued members of the healthcare team, achieving optimal drug therapy outcomes through the application of their knowledge.

The pharmacy practice residency offers a variety of core rotations (internal medicine, critical care, hematology/oncology, informatics, drug information, central operations, management & geriatrics), longitudinal experiences (ambulatory care, research, central operations & management), and elective rotations.  The program provides flexibility for the residents to focus on individual interests and career goals.  Each rotation is four to six weeks long.

The resident gains skills to become a confident, caring, and well-rounded direct patient care provider.  Residents will also participate in Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee activities, Medication Safety Committee activities, medication use evaluations, and provide education to pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and patients.  A major project suitable for publication is required.
