Whether you are a new graduate or an experienced nurse, making a smooth transition to your new position is an important first step. At Sibley Memorial Hospital, we’re committed to making the process a positive, productive experience. That’s why we provide an excellent, in-depth orientation program with an outstanding Nurse Education team.
Incoming nurses are personally assigned to preceptors based on their learning needs and personalities. We understand that one size does not fit all, and we take great care to select the right nurse preceptor for you.
After 90 days you will be evaluated to ensure that you are ready for your new assignment. If there are additional teaching needs identified, we’ll take whatever steps are necessary to make sure you are fully prepared and confident in your specialty area.
Orientation programs vary in length depending on the specialty area. For example, OR nurses have a 9-month orientation program with both classroom and hands-on experience. Orientation for Critical Care nurses is 6 months, while our NICU orientation is 5 months and includes a month-long rotation at Georgetown University Hospital.
