Nursing education and development programs for Sibley Memorial Hospital employees

Whether you are a new grad, mid-career nurse or seasoned RN, when it comes to learning and growth, we’ve got you covered at Sibley Memorial. Nursing is a journey, and every segment should be designed to help you advance so that you can realize your potential. At Sibley, our excellent educational and development programs include:

  • Nurse Extern Program – For rising senior nursing students, this summer program provides the opportunity to work on an assigned unit and develop assessment, organizational, time management and priority setting skills. See nursing theory put into practice. The program begins in May of each year.
  • Graduate Nurse Program – In this program, graduate nurses begin a two-week classroom orientation followed by several weeks of preceptor-based orientation on the unit. To qualify, new grads must be licensed as RNs in the District of Columbia. Programs are available in Medical Surgical Services, Women’s and Infant Services, Perioperative Services and Critical Care Services, plus Emergency Department. Programs normally begin in February, July and October.
  • Nurse Internship Programs – For new graduate RNs with work experience (less than one year) or experienced RNs entering a new specialty area, there are excellent Nurse Internship Programs in various specialty areas, including the OR, Critical Care and NICU.
  • PACE (Professional Advancement Clinical Excellence program) – Sibley’s career advancement model is based on a high level of commitment to clinical practice, leadership, service to the organization and performance improvement activities. This four-step ladder recognizes and rewards professional nurses who choose to develop excellence in either leadership (administrative) roles or clinical specialties for bedside RNs.

Additional educational programs include:

  • Online RN to BSN program
  • Educational assistance (also available to qualified part-time employees on a pro-rated basis)
  • Reimbursement pay for various specialty review courses and certifications
  • Tailored orientation programs
  • In-service training to enhance clinical practice and mirror "Best Practice"
  • Reimbursement for external workshops, seminars, etc.
