When Should I Register for a Childbirth Class or a Tour?

Reserve your class space during your first trimester or as soon as dates are available; classes fill up quickly so be sure to plan ahead.

When Should I Take a Childbirth Class or a Tour?

It is recommended you take classes or attend a tour during the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy.

Sibley Memorial Hospital offers a variety of childbirth classes:

Childbirth Classes Online:

Preparing for Labor and Birth eClass

Our online class is ideal for those expectant parents who can’t attend an on-site childbirth class due to work schedules, time constraints, or medical conditions. It is excellent refresher course for next-time around parents.This is a self-paced class that can be taken at your convenince.

The eight-chapter program is an interactive, web-based class that uses videos, personal birth stories, animations, activities, and games to teach all the essential information parents need to know to prepare for their birth. The core class is designed to take about four-five hours. There are additional sections in each chapter called "Want more?" that provide for more extensive learning if the parent is interested.

This e-learning program includes evidence based information that will help you:

  • Understand pregnancy – what’s happening to your body, discomforts, warning signs, nutrition, exercise, and more
  • Learn about labor – preparing for birth, pre-labor signs, onset of labor, 3D animation of labor process, and more
  • See how the stages of labor unfold – watch amazing real-life birth stories
  • Discover helpful comfort techniques – breathing, relaxation, massage, visualization, focal points, hydrotherapy, labor and pushing positions, advice for partners, and more

Cost: $100 (On-line access for 30 days.) (This class is non-refundable for any reason.)

You will receive your login information within 72 hours from the registration. You will have an immediate access to the class content the moment you activate your password. Be sure to provide valid email address during registration as this will be your username to access the class.

Chilbirth Classes On-Site:

Babycare Skills

This class will help you learn such skills as bathing, diapering, comforting a crying baby, and recognizing signs of illness, as well as coping methods for the first few weeks of parenthood.

Preparing to Breastfeed 

This pre-natal breastfeeding class teaches the art of breastfeeding to expectant parents. Learn about prenatal preparation, getting started, understanding your baby's cues, timing feedings, expressing and storing milk, bottles and your breastfed baby, and more.

Preparing for Labor and Birth One-Day Intensive

Preparing for Labor and Birth - One Day Intensive class is designed to prepare families for their first labor and birth experience. This childbirth class provides evidence based information on the physiological and emotional aspects of labor and delivery through lecture, discussion, video and hands on practice. Our goal is to increase your confidence and reduce anxiety about the birthing process. Elements of natural and medicated birth will be equally discussed to include the role of the partner, labor coping techniques, medical interventions, medications, cesarean birth and postpartum. Instructors are certified childbirth educators. Dress comfortably and bring 2 pillows and a blanket to a class. A Maternity tour is included as part of this class.

Class meets on Saturdays or Sundays in one session. There will be one-hour lunch break. Lunch is not included in a class fee; feel free to bring your own, eat in a hospital cafeteria or nearby restaurants.

Childbirth Prep Boot Camp

This class offers convenience of time to couples who want to complete all childbirth classes in one weekend.  This is a 2-day workshop and one registration secures your spot in three our most popular classes:
"Preparing for labor and birth" all day session on Saturday followed by "Baby care" and "Breastfeeding" classes next day, Sunday.

Maternity tour is included in Saturday’s session.

Class content on both days will cover complete curriculum that we teach in individual classes.
One registration covers expectant mother and her partner/support person.

Weekend Baby Care & Breastfeeding Class

This class combines two most sought skills parents are eager to learn. In just one day you will learn how to take care of your newborn at home and help you get started with breastfeeding.
Class is designed for busy parents-to-be who want to take both classes in one day.

Comfort Breathing and Relaxation for Labor and Birth

Comfort Breathing and Relaxation for Labor and Birth is designed to give familie,s who have already taken a Preparing for labor and birth class and are interested in the more natural approach, the tools that they need to help manage their own labors. This class is an extensive review of techniques briefly discussed in a labor class. The focus is all hands-on the comfort measures, relaxation, breathing, visualization, massage and partner involvement. This class is also an excellent refresher course for next time around parents.

Preparing for Planned Cesarean

Preparing for Cesarean is designed to prepare families for a planned Cesarean birth. Discussion includes factual and knowledge based information about Cesarean birth, surgical procedures, anesthesia, recovery, and the role of the support person.

One-night Refresher Class

Prerequisite: previous vaginal delivery.

This class is designed for families who already have experienced labor, birth and parenting and includes information about relaxation, breathing, medications and support techniques for labor. Maternity Tour is included as part of the class course.

Sibling Tour

The Sibling tour is a brief tour of our Family Centered Care Unit with activities to follow. Your child will be able to take a peek into our nursery and be presented with an activity packet along with selected handouts for parents to ease the transition for big brothers and sisters. We may visit a postpartum room, availability permitting.
Tours are structured to accommodate children 2-6 years of age only, so please do not register older or younger children.

Each child has to be registered separately to reserve a spot.
Only two adults are to accompany per family, parents or guardians. Regster under your child's name and parents/guardians names may be entered in a comment section. Please do not register or bring other family members, we have very limited number of seats and we want to make sure each child gets their deserved spot.

When: weekends only

Maternity Tour

Complimentary Maternity Tours are designed to help expectant couples plan for birth of their baby at Sibley Hospital. On this tour you will have the opportunity to see a Labor, Delivery, and Recovery (LDR) room as well as a Postpartum room (availability permitting) and acquire information and handouts to simplify your stay in the hospital.

On-line registration is required so that all participants in the group will have comfortable access. No walk-ins. No add-ons when classes are full.

Each tour is for up to two adults.  Tour is reserved for expectant moms and their partners only. Number of attendees is limited per tour and we want to ensure that each mom has an oppotunity to see laboring suites.Please do not register any other family members.

Children of any age are not allowed on Maternity Tour, however, we do have complimentary Sibling Tours for children ages 2-6. To register for a Sibling Tour click here.


If you are attending Preparation for Labor and Birth, Cesarean or a Refresher class, Maternity Tour is already included in those sessions and you do not have to register separately.
