Senior Association - Event

Personal Safety Through Self-Defense

The most common crime against older adults—after fraud and abuse—is assault and robbery, according to the National Center for Victims of Crime. Also, older people suffer greater physical, psychological and financial loss than younger people do when they are victimized in this way. Knowing basic safety tips based on self-defense maneuvers can fend off an assault, perhaps save your life. And anyone
can learn them at any age.
Martial arts expert Jane McKenna will demonstrate key martial arts techniques as well as general fitness exercises that are good for improving balance and strengthening muscles. She will also provide tips on what to watch for in potentially dangerous places such as ATMs, malls and rest-stops.
Jane McKenna teaches martial arts and seminars at senior centers and assisted living facilities. She also works as a marketing liaison for Potomac Home Support, a home healthcare service of Sibley and Suburban hospitals.
