Dimitri is born in 1917 in Thessaloniki, Greece, a multicultural city, where Jews, Christians and Muslims live side by side. Katerina arrives as a refugee to Greece five years later. Their lives will be entwined over the next 80 years—through Nazi occupation, civil war, persecution and economic collapse. In Thessaloniki in 2007, a young Anglo-Greek hears his grandparents’ story for the first time and understand he has a momentous decision to make.
