Club Memory and the support groups meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. The support group is at 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., and Club Memory is at 1:00 p.m. They are both at Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church. We ask people to call ahead if they want to attend the support group.
Club Memory is a stigma-free social club for people—and their spouses, partners and care partners—who have been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment or other early forms of dementia. Based on a memory café model popular in Europe, the club began meeting on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month in the private dining room of Sibley in September 2011. Since then Club Memory has expanded in some exciting ways and continues to grow in response to members’ and community needs.
The club has outgrown Sibley’s dining room, so in partnership with Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church (MMUMC), it continues to hold its twice monthly meetings in MMUMC’s gorgeous Great Hall. The Great Hall is a beautifully lit room with plenty of space for the 30 to 40 members who attend each meeting. At meetings, members enjoy light refreshments while they engage in activities such as sharing resources, playing games and solving puzzles, listening to musical guests and flying remote-control helicopters. They appreciate the conversation, camaraderie and laughter they share with their peers and friends, who understand, accept and support one another on their journey.
In addition to the twice-monthly meetings, Club Memory members are offered outings to social and cultural events each month. The outings have included lunching at the Irish Inn at Glen Echo, touring local museums such as the Hillwood and Kreeger Museums, going on photography tours to the D.C. Botanical Gardens and enjoying guided tours at Lincoln’s Cottage and the Arboretum. Club Memory also offers a support group for members with a diagnosis. This group meets twice a month just before Club Memory’s regular meetings at MMUMC.
If you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment or dementia, know that there is hope and support for you and your family. Please contact Ashley Nunn or Marti Bailey at 202-364-7602 to learn more about Club Memory.
