Widowed Persons Outreach Biannual Bereavement Conference

10/17/13

Although Widowed Persons Outreach (WPO) provides help for those who are widowed, this conference is for everyone. You may be a professional or helping a friend or family member through loss and want to deepen your skills and understanding. Or you yourself may be experiencing a loss. Whatever your situation, this conference will give you new insights and inspiration.

The speaker, Julie Potter, MSW, former Senior Association coordinator at Sibley Memorial Hospital, has been a pioneer in the senior wellness field for more than 30 years. Julie, Letty Geiger and many dedicated community members co-created Sibley’s WPO in 1992. As coordinator, Julie developed Sibley’s overall wellness program, which has grown from one exercise class to eight support groups, 11 exercise classes and numerous social and cultural events. Today, Sibley has one of the most comprehensive senior wellness programs in the nation. On June 6, 2013, Julie received the Seabury Leadership in Aging Award for her work.

Keynote Address: Ms. Potter will focus on the uniqueness of every person’s grief. She will explain the process of grief, how to help oneself or someone else through it and what doesn’t help. "Over the past 10 or 20 years, authorities on bereavement have offered different guidelines for coping with the elements of grief: guilt, forgiveness, depression, anger, acceptance, dealing with anniversaries. I’ll highlight those differences," she says. "The future of bereavement care is in helping people fashion their own recoveries. The idea is to take what works best for you." She will also discuss the different grieving styles of men and women and traumatic loss.

Tibetan Singing Bowls with Carol Colacurcio: Carol is a classically trained musician, teacher and sound therapist who will demonstrate her Tibetan Singing Bowls. The sound of the bowls has a healing effect on the body and spirit. Ms. Potter will introduce the demonstration.
