Book Marks: Coffee & Camaraderie
Two pre-feminist trailblazers
Dangerous Ambition: Rebecca West and Dorothy Thompson, New Women in Search of Love and Power, by Susan Hertog.
Born in the 1890s, friends Dorothy Thompson and Rebecca West lived parallel lives that placed them
at the center of the social and historical upheavals of the 20th century. American-born newswoman
Thompson was once ranked with Eleanor Roosevelt as among the most influential women in America.
Englishwoman Rebecca West blazed a trail as journalist, critic, novelist and historian. These two self-made women were among the first to warn the world of the dangers of fascism, Hitler and communism—but they paid a price for their fame in their complicated and fascinating love lives.
