Summer 2010

Our National Volunteer Week was a wonderful success due to the kindness and generosity of the many units that contributed breakfast and snacks for us to enjoy. I want to especially thank the Medical Staff for providing coffee and tea each day. The year seems to be flying by so quickly. It is amazing to me that the summer is already here. One of the constants that always remains throughout the years is the personal commitment that each of YOU make. You touch others every day through your role of service to Sibley. In this light, I want to welcome Joy Choppin as our new Vice-President of the Volunteer Service. She will take over for Kathleen Svec who has resigned due to her many commitments to family and other projects. I am happy to say that Kathleen will continue to volunteer at Sibley. I extend a very special thank you to Kathleen for her dedicated service to our volunteers.

As always, please feel free to come to me with any new suggestions, ideas, or concerns.

My door is always open.

Have a great summer… Be Safe & Be Well!

Spring 2010

Welcome to Sibley Memorial Hospital! We are grateful that you are willing to share your time, talent and enthusiasm at Sibley. Our hospital and its programs are greatly enhanced through the participation and commitment of our volunteers.

The Volunteer and Guest Relations Department has served the Sibley community for the past 50 years with dedication to our patients and their families. Our service is centered on The Sibley Circle of Excellence where "Our values are at the center of everything we do."

Our volunteers are often the first people that our patients and visitors encounter. They are also sometimes the last one at the time of discharge to bid our patients farewell and thank them for choosing Sibley. Each one is involved in many activities throughout the hospital, such as the Information Desk, the book cart, the gift shop, delivering flowers, surgical waiting, assisting in the ER, as well as being involved in the Guest Relations Program to enhance patient comfort and satisfaction. Whether you are working directly with patients or providing other support services, your assistance makes a significant difference.

We hope your volunteer experience will provide you with satisfaction in serving others, new friendships, and opportunities for personal growth. We are certainly pleased and thank you for choosing to volunteer at Sibley Memorial Hospital and hope you will find your time here very rewarding.

Welcome!

Marianne Monek
Director, Volunteer Services & Guest Relations

Volunteers Celebrate 50th Anniversary

In September 1959, the Sibley Volunteer Service, then known as Volunteer Service Corps, was founded by the hospital's chaplain, Reverend Brady Tyson. By the end of the year, the organization had 19 members serving at the Information Desk and with the Mobile Shopping Cart Service.

In 2009, over 350 adults and students volunteer at Sibley and have contributed 30, 018 hours of service. Volunteers now work in every department of the hospital. Through 50 years of commitment, members of the Volunteer Service have given of themselves to the hospital and the community.

The Volunteer Service has initiated a worthwhile new project for breast cancer patients, The Heart Pillow Project.
