Sibley Memorial Hospital Expansion: Medical Building
Dear Friends,
Sibley Memorial Hospital has submitted an application to the District of Columbia
Zoning Commission to re-zone a portion of our property to permit the construction of a Medical Building.
Our mission is to provide high quality health services and facilities for the community, to promote wellness,
relieve suffering and restore health as swiftly, safely and humanely as it can be done, consistent with
the best service that we can give at the highest value for all concerned. We believe that building a
Medical Building is consistent with and will support our mission of service.
Our goal is to build a new Medical Building that will provide convenience for physicians, patients,
and families. The proposed Medical Building will include offices for physicians, an outpatient surgery center,
a diagnostic imaging center, a pharmacy—all accessible from a covered parking garage. Patients will be able
to see a physician, have diagnostic tests completed, and fill prescriptions—all in one visit.
Because we are located in a residential neighborhood, Sibley is mindful of concerns about any changes to our
hospital and property. Consequently, we have designed an architecturally pleasing and environmentally friendly
building to compliment the existing character of the surrounding area.
For example:
- With modifications to the original design, this building will be smaller in scale than other buildings on Sibley's grounds and will be set back 100 yards from Loughboro Road.
- The adjacent covered parking garage will be illuminated with low impact lights and will be darkened nightly at 9:00 p.m.
- The landscaping will use the same time-honored foundation plantings and trees as nearby homes.
Sibley has a long history of being responsive to and respectful of the needs of our neighbors. To address
neighborhood concerns about an increase in traffic, we will:
- Construct a new intersection at Loughboro Road and Dalecarlia Parkway.
- Provide free and continuous shuttle bus service for neighbors, patients, visitors, and staff from Metro's Friendship Heights station throughout each weekday.
- Maintain Little Falls Road as a public road behind the hospital.
Jerry Price, Sibley’s Executive Vice President, has made sure that the project design reflects many of the
comments offered during extensive outreach with neighbors and neighborhood groups. We appreciate the support
for a new Medical Building from The Palisades Citizens Association, the Spring Valley West Neighborhood
Association, the DC Office of Planning, the DC Department of Transportation, the DC Chamber of Commerce,
as well as the former and current Council Members for Ward Three. We also thank the many neighbors,
employees, volunteers, and physicians who have taken time to voice their support.
We will continue to keep you informed on our progress.
Sincerely,
Robert Sloan President and Chief Executive Officer
