December 23, 2013
Suzanne Honchalk, R.N., M.S.N., nurse navigator, Institute of Bone and Joint Health (pictured third from the left), was announced as a Johns Hopkins Nursing Shining Star runner- up at the second-annual fall gala, "An Evening With the Stars," at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.
The Shining Star Award honors outstanding nurses in the Hopkins community ranging from licensed and practicing nurses in Hopkins-affiliated hospitals to faculty and student nurses at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Nurses were nominated by their peers and chosen as finalists by each institution’s leadership, then selected as winners by a committee of Hopkins nurse leaders.
Suzanne is worthy of recognition for being the creator of the patient preoperative screening tool that guides patient information collection. This information is used to initiate and schedule appropriate referrals ensuring comprehensive and coordinated care. The total joint replacement team now uses this information as the basis for preoperative, postoperative and discharge care planning at their weekly multidisciplinary team meetings.
Spending her entire nursing career at Sibley, Suzanne began as a unit nurse received her M.S.N. in nursing education and then became the nurse educator of the orthopedics unit. Her belief that total joint replacement patient care could be improved by the introduction of the role of a nurse navigator led her to create and present the role to Sibley administration. She was than appointed and has exceeded Sibley’s expectations.
As the lead on a multidisciplinary team in the role of patient advocate, educator, liaison and counselor for the total joint replacement patients, Suzanne is responsible for ensuring all total joint patients receive safe, high-quality, comprehensive services throughout the care continuum. She also serves as a clinical resource with an expertise in total joint care management throughout Sibley and the community.
