Vein Ablation: Fast, safe relief for painful varicose veins

October 12, 2009

Andrea Taylor had pain and discomfort caused by varicose veins, which considerably worsened after two pregnancies. For years she wanted to have the problem addressed but was looking for treatment less invasive than the traditional surgical vein stripping.

After learning about a new, minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins from interventional radiologist Christopher P. Rothstein, MD, Andrea decided to go ahead with the procedure.

As Dr. Rothstein explains, "The wonderful thing about vein ablation is that people walk in with symptoms and walk out less than an hour later with little to no pain and are virtually symptom-free."

Instead of removing the vein, vein ablation closes off the abnormal vein using radiofrequency energy. Once the vein is closed, pressure is relieved. "I have better circulation, improved appearance and decreased pain," Andrea says. "My leg feels much healthier and looks better."

The procedure takes approximately 35 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis. In most cases, it is covered by insurance.
