Sibley Awarded an “A” for Patient Safety by Hospital Safety Score (SM)

December 11, 2012

The only Washington, D.C. hospital to receive a score of an "A"

Washington, D.C., Sibley Memorial Hospital was honored with an "A" Hospital Safety ScoreSM by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.  Sibley was the only hospital in the District of Columbia to receive a score of an "A". The Hospital Safety ScoreSM was calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel using publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. U.S. hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D or F for their safety.

Richard O. Davis, Ph.D., president, Sibley Memorial Hospital commented, "I am so privileged and honored to work with physicians and staff that put the safety of their patients first every day.  This national recognition provides additional motivation as Sibley works toward becoming a hub for innovation in safety, quality and health care delivery.  I look forward to continuing to grow the strong foundation that we have in place, and to working with the Sibley medical staff and employees on this endeavor."

"It's The Leapfrog Group's goal to give patients the information they need and deserve before even entering a hospital," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "We congratulate the hospitals that earned an 'A' and we look forward to the day when all hospitals in the U.S. will earn the highest scores for putting patient safety first."

Leapfrog is an employer-based group focused on promoting improvements in health care safety and quality.  They developed this report under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel experts, including Peter Pronovost, M.D., Ph.D., F.C.C.M, director of the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins Medicine. The Leapfrog report takes into account 26 quality and safety measures, including fall-related trauma, patients receiving the correct antibiotic and surgery patients receiving appropriate treatment to prevent blood clots at the right time, in which Sibley received a perfect score of 100%.  Overall, the grade takes into account 11 different outcomes measures, which include errors, accidents and injuries that the hospital has publicly reported, and 15 process measures, which include management structure and procedures that the hospital has in place to protect the patient from errors, accidents and injuries.
