Gary M. Stephenson named director of public relations for Sibley Memorial Hospital and Suburban Hospital

Gary M. Stephenson, former director of media relations for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., has rejoined Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) as director of public relations for Sibley Memorial Hospital and Suburban Hospital, both members of JHM.

In this role, Stephenson will facilitate print, broadcast and online media coverage of Sibley and Suburban news and will help journalists tap the expertise of their respective scientific and medical experts as well as direct the other public relations activities of the two hospitals.
Before joining St. Jude, Stephenson was director of media relations and public affairs for Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, MD.  At Hopkins, Stephenson was the chief spokesperson for the institution and responsible for strategic media relations planning and implementation, including corporate communications, executive leadership communications and crisis communications.
Prior to joining Hopkins in 1996, Stephenson was senior associate director of media relations and public affairs for the University of Maryland, College Park, the flagship university of the Maryland University System.
An award-winning medical journalist, Stephenson has more than 25 years of experience in health care and medical research public relations and journalism. He is the author and editor of several medical publications, including A Journalist’s Resource for Business of Medicine Reporting, Standards of Medical Care,Quality Determinants of Mammography, and Report on Medical Guidelines and Outcomes Research.
Stephenson is also a former associate faculty member of the University of Notre Dame in Baltimore and the University of Memphis where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in public relations, crisis communications, communications campaigns and advertising.
He is a graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he majored in journalism. He later obtained a Master of Science degree in public relations from American University.
