Transportation on Inauguration Day: Monday, January 21, 2013

January 16, 2013

For Patients, Visitors, Volunteers, Staff and Physicians

Sibley, like all Washington area hospitals, is preparing for the enormous number of people expected for the inauguration. Our key challenge will be to meet the regular medical care demands of the community as well as the concern that any type of incident has the potential to result in an insufficient medical response without full staffing.

Getting to the hospital will be a challenge and you are urged to plan carefully for your transportation. The United States Secret Service has created an inauguration page on their website, http://www.secretservice.gov/presidential_inaugural.shtml with information on road closures, mass transit and other information. .

The following is a summary of restricted routes and road closures on Monday, January 21, 2013:

  • 14th Street Bridge to 14th Street – All traffic will be diverted by MPD onto the Southeast/Southwest freeway beginning at 5:30 a.m.
  • Roosevelt Bridge – Traffic coming across the Roosevelt Bridge will be diverted into northbound Potomac River Expressway to Pennsylvania Avenue or Whitehurst Freeway/K Street.
  • Memorial Bridge – Restricted to pedestrians and authorized vehicles only
  • Clara Barton Parkway operating under holiday schedule (two-way traffic all day)
  • Sousa Bridge – Open to all traffic from east of the river to security checkpoint at Capitol Hill
  • East Capitol Street – Open to all traffic. Roadways near RFK Stadium are primary routes for charter tour bus operators.

Metro

According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Metro is preparing to be the transportation mode of choice for hundreds of thousands of visitors on Inauguration Day 2013.

On Inauguration Day:

  • Metrorail will open at 4 a.m. and close at 2 a.m.
  • Metrorail will provide 17 consecutive hours of rush-hour service — from 4 a.m. until 9 p.m. Peak fares will be in effect during that time.
  • Normal weekday parking rates will apply at Metrorail parking facilities. Parking fees will be charged as you exit the garage and may be paid by SmarTrip® or credit card.
  • Metrobus will operate weekday rush hour service in the morning, followed by an early rush hour in the afternoon. Many routes will operate on detours due to Inaugural events.
  • MetroAccess will operate identical hours to Metrorail and Metrobus. MetroAccess customers are encouraged to plan extra time due to increased traffic throughout the service area.

Additional Metro information will be posted at http://www.wmata.com/getting_around/metro_events/inauguration.cfm?nocache as Inaugural event schedules and service plans are finalized.

For Sibley Employees

We will be counting on you to be here for your scheduled shift.

To ensure that you are able to report to duty as scheduled on Inauguration Day, Sibley will continue to provide shuttle service from the Tenleytown metro station.

Beginning Sunday morning, we will establish a virtual command center providing sit stats every 12 hours minimum, more if necessary.

Please watch the news and check emails for updates as information may change.   For those employees without email, this information will also be posted on Sibley.org, so please pass this on.
