Sibley Wins Two Awards at the District of Columbia Hospital Association Banquet

October 30, 2013

On Tuesday, October 15, the District of Columbia Hospital Association (DCHA) held their annual banquet, where they announced the 2013 awards. Sibley Memorial Hospital was presented with the DCHA Distinguished Service Award and the DCHA Environmental Excellence Award.

The DCHA awards are among the most prestigious health care awards given in the District. DCHA is a non-profit organization with 16 member hospitals and approximately 35 associate members whose mission is to provide leadership in improving the health care system in DC. Deborah McDonough, Sibley’s director of Patient Safety & Quality Improvement and co-chair of DCHA’s Quality, Patient Safety and Compliance Committee; was awarded the DCHA Distinguished Service Award. Robert Jewel, director of Environmental Services accepted the DCHA Environmental Excellence Award on behalf of Sibley.

The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Deborah McDonough due to her outstanding service to the DCHA community. Under her leadership, the Sibley Hospital Engagement Network Team was formed and achieved 30%-39% reduction in seven of the focus areas that aim to improve patient care and cut readmissions as part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Harm Across the Board Program. Deborah’s dedication has also led to Sibley being selected to share its Harm Across the Board story at the Quality & Safety Roadmap meeting this past July.

The Environmental Excellence Award is given to a hospital that demonstrates commitment to establishing strong environmental practices to improve the health of patients, staff and the environment. Sibley’s Green Team has led Sibley in increasing recycling around the hospital and decreasing regulated medical waste. The Project Green initiative has helped Sibley save 1,694 pounds of instruments from the land fill, which translates to $21,964 of savings in both purchasing and destruction costs.
