Sibley Environmental Services Team Wins Second Place In Clean Hands Contest

October 23, 2013

The Sibley Memorial Hospital Environmental Services (EVS) Team entered artwork in Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Hopkins Clean Hands Contest and took second place with the entry titled, "EVS Graffiti Art." The Clean Hands Contest encouragedJohns Hopkins Health System members to demonstrate their commitment to hand hygiene with displays of art. Entries included  mixed media, poetry, artwork and videos, each of which reflected the "Hopkins Hands" mission of emphasizing the importance of improving patient safety through proper hand hygiene.

The EVS team entry was not just an artistic endeavor, but an educational opportunity as well, as members painted their hands and placed their handprint on the collage. The project "showed the staff that they would not enter or leave a room with ‘paint’ on their hands, just like they would not want to enter or leave a room with germs on their hands," said Robert Jewell, director of EVS.

Sibley’s Environmental Services team has demonstrated leadership in providing excellence for the health of patients, staff and the environment. The team is making improvements with hand hygiene and other hospital safety initiatives.

"Hopkins Hands" goal is to protect patients, visitors and colleagues. Improved adherence to hand hygiene has been shown to terminate outbreaks in health care facilities, to reduce transmission of antimicrobial resistant organisms and reduce overall infection rates.
