New method for hip replacement wins favor with some surgeons (WashingtonPost.com)

Anthony Unger, medical director at the Institute of Bone and Joint Health at Sibley Memorial Hospital and a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at George Washington University Hospital, says the anterior approach is “truly minimally invasive.” Unger, who has done about 4,000 hip replacements over 26 years and has used the anterior technique for the past eight years, says “patients have better overall functionality, can sleep on their sides and be confident the new hip won’t dislocate.”

Meningitis Outbreak Investigation

Oct 09, 2012

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is conducting a multi-state investigation of meningitis among patients who received epidural steroid injections. So far, 91 patients from 7 states have been identified. Several of these patients have had strokes related to the meningitis. Seven deaths have been reported to date. The meningitis was found to be caused by a fungus that is common in the environment but rarely causes meningitis. This form of meningitis is not contagious.
