Dr. BerkleyChristine K. Berkley, M.D.
Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist 

Expert in General Surgical Pathology, Dr. Christine K. Berkley has been practicing Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Sibley Memorial Hospital/Johns Hopkins Medicine (SMH/JHM) for 24 years. 
 
Dr. Berkley has medical publications in the field of hematopathology. Dr. Berkley works closely with the Departments of General Surgery and all SMH/JHM Departments, the Breast Center, Cancer Center, and Sarcoma Centers at SMH/JHM.  She is an active member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
 
Dr. Berkley trained at University of Minnesota Medical School, followied by an internship and residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Hennepin County Medical Center and George Washington University Medical Center and is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.  
 

 

Dr. Fanburg-SmithJulie Carolyn Fanburg-Smith, M.D. 
Professor of Pathology
Orthopaedic, Soft Tissue, and General Surgical Pathology 

As a top regional, national and international surgical pathology consultant for the past two decades, Dr. Julie C. Fanburg-Smith comes to Sibley Memorial Hospital after fifteen years as Deputy Chairman and Director of Education the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, when she helped to develop the most recent classification of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors.  Dr. Fanburg-Smith consults on challenging patient pathology cases that require immunohistochemistry, molecular tests and/or radiologic-pathologic correlation, tumours of the abdomen, pelvis, retroperitoneum, extremities, thorax, skin, head and neck, oral, gastrointestinal, gynecologic, breast, bone, joint, and soft tissue pathology of all anatomic sites and patient ages and, with her pathology colleagues, commences the Sibley Memorial Hospital Pathology Consultation Practice.  Dr. Fanburg-Smith and colleagues support the Departments of General Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery as well as the Breast Center, Cancer Center and Sarcoma Center at Sibley.  
 
Dr. Fanburg-Smith has authored more than 200 book chapters and scholarly peer-reviewed pathology articles on rare and common pathology entities and tumors, including chapters and the consensus committee for the World Health Organization books for Soft Tissue, Bone, and Head and Neck, Surgical Pathology of the Head and Neck Tumors, Modern Soft Tissue Pathology, Pediatric Bone Tumors and other Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology books.  Regarded as one of the top pathology educators in the greater Washington area, she has been adjunctly appointed at Johns Hopkins Hospital, USUHS, Howard, and Georgetown University Hospitals and teaches at and directs many local and international courses and seminars, including the AFIP Anatomic Pathology and AFIP Orthopaedic and Soft Tissue Pathology Courses. She is an active/elected member and/or educator for the International Skeletal Society (ISS), American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP), United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), Maryland Society of Pathologists, Virginia Society for Pathology (VSP), elected to the Surgical Pathology Committee for College of American Pathologists (CAP), and American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Dr. Fanburg-Smith trained at  Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, followed by internship in General Surgery at Dartmouth Medical Center, residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Vermont, and fellowship in Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology and General Surgical Pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard University and is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.  
 

 

Dr. KlappenbachRobert Scott Klappenbach, M.D. 
Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist 

As a top regional general surgical pathologist, with broad experience in state-of-the art Breast, Gynecologic, Pulmonary, Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, Dermatologic Pathology, and Hematopathology, Dr. R. Scott Klappenbach has been practicing at the busy Sibley Memorial Hospital/Johns Hopkins Medicine (SMH/JHM) Pathology Practice for twenty-four years.  
 
Dr. Klappenbach has peer-reviewed medical publications on the topics of hematopathology, dermatologic, infectious disease, pulmonary, hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal neoplasm. Together with his colleagues, he starts the SMH/JHM Pathology Consultation Practice (SMHPCP).   Dr. Klappenbach works closely with the Departments of General Surgery and all SMH/JHM Departments, the Breast Center, Cancer Center and Sarcoma Centers at SMH/JHM.  He is an active member of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Medical Society of District of Columbia.
 
Dr. Klappenbach trained at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, followed by residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. 
 

 

Dr. ShafferMargaret M. Shaffer, M.D.
Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist, Cytopathologist

Named a top pathologist by Consumer’s Research Corporations of America, Dr. Margaret M. Shaffer has been practicing surgical pathology in a busy practice at Sibley Memorial Hospital/Johns Hopkins Medicine (SMH/JHM) for 20 years. Dr. Shaffer’s expertise is in general surgical pathology, with special interest in state-of-the-art-breast pathology, gynecologic pathology, and cytopathology.  Fellowship trained in cytology, she also performs fine needle aspirations of palpable lesions, with special interest in thyroid nodules.  She has published in peer-reviewed medical journals on research involving breast cancer, lung cancer, and thyroid cytology.   
 
Together with her colleagues, she commences the SMH/JHM Pathology Consultation Practice (SMHPCP).   Dr. Shaffer works closely with the Departments of General Surgery and all SMH/JHM Departments, the Breast Center, Cancer Center and Sarcoma Centers at SMH/JHM.  She is an active member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
 
Dr. Shaffer has her Masters of Science in Biochemistry and Medical Degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine.  Her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and fellowship training in Surgical Pathology and Cytology were also at George Washington University School of Medicine.  Dr. Shaffer is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
