From that moment on, it is a race from one transition to another; transitions from infancy to older adulthood, from school to work, from being single to being married, from working to retirement or not and more. Some of these transitions will be planned events, some will not; some may be non-events. The more success we have making these transitions, the more satisfied we are with our lives. This theory of adult transition, developed by Dr. Nancy Schlossberg, is going to be the model that will empower group members to navigate transitions like pros. Get ready to take control!

Loneliness isn’t just an emotional issue; it’s a form of stress that has been linked to a higher risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, depression and early death. It’s particularly acute among older adults; a 2005 study found that nearly 60 percent of people age 70 and older experience some type of loneliness. In the study, 40 adults between the ages of 55 and 85 were divided into two groups. One practiced mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), which trains the mind to pay attention to what is happening in the moment, and "cultivate clarity, insight and understanding," according to the Center for Mindfulness, which developed the program. This group attended two-hour weekly meetings, meditated at home for 30 minutes daily, and attended one day-long retreat. The control group did not meditate.
"While this was a small sample, the results were very encouraging," noted Dr. Michael Irwin, a professor of psychiatry at UCLA’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, in a press release. "It adds to a growing body of research that is showing the positive benefits of a variety of meditative techniques, including tai chi and yoga."

This 8-week course is conducted by Ashley Nunn, M.A.
Ashley has been practicing mindfulness since 1995. She is a marriage and family therapist and a yoga instructor, and she coordinates Club memory, a social club founded at Sibley Hospital for people diagnosed with early stage Alzheimers or cognitive impairement and their caregivers and family.

It’s particularly acute among older adults; a 2005 study found that nearly 60 percent of people age 70 and older experience some type of
loneliness. The control group did not
meditate.

She is a marriage and family therapist and a yoga instructor, and she coordinates Club memory, a social club founded at Sibley Hospital for people diagnosed with early stage Alzheimers or cognitive impairement and their caregivers and family. our nation from terrorism—or does the
U.S. government too often withhold
information the public should have?
Few people can address this question better
than Mike Levin, who spent 46 years as
an intelligence officer with the National
Security Agency (NSA). The NSA’s mission
is to protect U.S. signals activities and to
develop intelligence from foreign signals
so as to protect the U.S. from foreign
intervention. Levin will discuss the need
for government secrecy in this endeavor
and why it is a double-edged sword.
"There is the need to protect us against
terrorism," he says, "but on the other
hand, the government owes the public
information on what it is doing and why it
is worthwhile. The difference is a fine line,
and it should be treated carefully."
In his presentation Levin will discuss
intelligence security in the context
of freedom of the press, warrantless
surveillance, leaks, the role of foreign
intelligence, NSA’s role in relation to the
CIA and the increasingly critical issue
of cyber security. He will describe the
presidential directive that specifies what
classified information is and isn’t and who
has authority to classify, and how long
information can be withheld before it is
declassified. Also, he will highlight cases
in which he believes disclosure could
have jeopardized national security as well
as times when the government might
have made a mistake in holding back
information.
A Q&A session will follow the
presentation, so bring your questions.

Mike Levin was awarded the National
Intelligence Medal, the highest honor
given to someone in the intelligence field
by the U.S. government. He has lectured
around the country on the NSA. Levin
was interviewed by filmmakers for the
documentary Secrecy, which explored the
tensions between our nation’s safety and
our ideals as a democracy. The film won
the Best Documentary category at the
Newport International Film Festival and
was an official selection at the Sundance
Film Festival.
