Coordinated, Comprehensive Care

"All is well"— this is the norm for most women. However, when there is cancer, our team approach, with close collaboration among specialists provide a high standard of care. According to Thomas A. Fleury, MD, Chairman of Sibley’s Department of Pathology, "The increase in the variety of treatment options for breast cancer patients has made close collaboration among specialists essential to the decision-making process."

At the Center’s regularly scheduled Breast Conferences, patients’ cases are discussed by the team which includes radiologists, surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, pain medicine specialists, oncology nurses and other specialties as needed. The team explores various treatment options as well as the different aspects of a woman’s health in order to recommend the best treatment plan for her.

Breast Imaging Services

  • State-of-the-Art Digital (computerized) Screening Mammography
-including R2 Computer Aided Technology or CAD
  • Diagnostic Mammography
  • Breast MRI
  • Breast Ultrasound
  • Image-guided biopsy, including Mammotome stereotactic core biopsy and ultrasound guided core biopsy
  • Dexa Bone Densitometry examination for osteoporosis screening

What is R2 and Why?

The R2 ImageChecker® System is a computer-aided detection (CAD) system that acts like a "spell-check" or a "double-read" of your mammogram. The system digitizes your mammogram and analyzes it using software that highlights areas for the radiologist to take a second look. Use of the ImageChecker® system can aid in earlier detection of cancer which is key to better outcomes.

Stereotactic

Mammography and ultrasound can be used to position a needle into the breast to obtain core samples of breast tissue.

Stereotactic biopsy uses digital mammography to position the needle with pinpoint accuracy while the woman lies comfortably on a table. The Mammotome System allows accurate fast sampling of the area.

Ultrasound-guided biopsy is a similar procedure, using ultrasound to guide the needle into position. Its advantage is speed, plus positioning may be more comfortable.

Your physician will discuss the options for biopsy for your specific situation. At the Sibley Center for Breast Health, stereotactic biopsy is performed by breast surgeons and/or radiologists. Ultrasound guided biopsy is performed by Dr. Zuurbier, Chief of Breast Imaging. Also, some abnormalities are better seen by ultrasound.

Screening Guidelines as recommended by the National Cancer Institute

Women in their 40s and older should a mammogram ever one to two years. Women who are younger and have risk factors for breast cancer should ask their healthcare provider whether to have mammograms and how often to have them.

Or you may visit the American Cancer Society website at www.cancer.org for more details.
