Your appointment will be scheduled by your physician who will give you specific instructions and answer any questions you may have.
Once your procedure has been scheduled, please call the Admissions Department
, (202) 537-4190, to pre-register. You will be asked to provide demographic and insurance information. You will also be asked if you have an advance directive (see explanation below). After pre-registration, we will assist you in obtaining any necessary insurance precertification.
If you are having general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, your physician will order diagnostic tests which must be completed prior to your surgery date. If you are to receive local anesthesia, your physician will inform you if pre-admission tests are needed. You may schedule an appointment for pre-admission testing by contacting the Admission Testing Center at (202) 537-4437. Chest X-ray, EKGs, or laboratory tests performed outside Sibley Memorial Hospital may be used to meet your pre-admission requirements. Pre-admission testing must be completed four to ten days prior to surgery. Please make the appropriate arrangements to meet this requirement. Failure to do so may result in all diagnostic studies being repeated the day of surgery. You may fax the results to (202) 364-7639.
Advance directives are documents which state your choices for health care, or name someone to make those choices for you if you become unable to do so. You may make decisions about your future medical treatment by means of formal documents such as living wills and durable power of attorney for health care. The hospital does not discriminate or place conditions on the provision of care based on whether or not an advance directive has been executed.
